The Herzegovina run: falls, tekke, hill town, in that order.
Almost everyone does this loop once. What separates the trips is where they set off, how long you get at the water, and whether Počitelj is a photo stop or a proper climb.

Two cities, and the river towns strung between them.
Sarajevo sits in a bowl of hills at the top of the country. Mostar sits on the Neretva near the bottom. Everything worth a day out is on the road between them, or a short run west of it.
Sarajevo is a walk, a coffee, and one hard hour of recent history.
The bazaar still hammers copper by hand, the pavement changes from Ottoman stone to Habsburg tile at a marked line, and the hills that ringed the city in the siege are a cable-car ride away. Guides here were mostly here.
The days out most travellers to Bosnia end up taking.
Every Bosnian review →Booking numbers concentrate hard here: the falls run, the bridge, and a morning with somebody who lived through the siege.

Mostar: the bridge at nine, the bazaar by noon, the divers when they feel like it.
Stari Most was rebuilt stone by stone from the riverbed and the town around it is small enough to cross twice before lunch. Most people arrive on a coach from the coast, see it in three hours and leave. Staying the night is the cheap upgrade.

What a day out in Bosnia and Herzegovina actually costs.
This is one of the cheapest countries in Europe to book a guided day in, and the price gap between a good tour and a great one is usually the size of a lunch.
Old-town walks, museum mornings, coffee and food routes, and the short runs out to Blagaj.
The full-day standards: the Herzegovina loop, rafting at Konjic, the coach days from the coast.
The siege, the tunnel and the Olympic years, explained by people who were here.
Bosnia handles its 1990s in the open. Guides walk you along the frontline streets, down the tunnel dug under the runway, and up to the bobsleigh track that went from Olympic venue to gun position in eight years.
Four Bosnian bookings that run on somebody else’s calendar.
Most of this country can be arranged over breakfast. These four cannot: they depend on snow, on water levels, on a bus timetable out of Croatia, or on a room with eight seats in it.
- 01Lukomir Highland Village HikeThe road to the highland village is under snow for months. The walk only runs once the pass is clear, roughly June to October.
- 02Tara River Rafting Day TourRafting on the upper Neretva runs to a season and a water release, and the good boats go weeks ahead.
- 03Mostar and Kravice Waterfalls Small-Group TourSwimming under the falls depends on the flow. Spring is loud and brown; high summer is the swimmable one.
- 04Fall of Yugoslavia, Sarajevo War Tour with Tunnel of Hope Museum and FrontlinesThe tunnel museum takes small groups with veteran guides, and the morning slots are the first to go.
When the passes shut, Bosnia moves indoors.
November to March the highland tracks are under snow and the Neretva runs cold and fast. Locals answer it the same way every year: coffee poured from a copper džezva, a long lunch, and history told in a warm room rather than walked in the wind.
By place — the two hubs and the towns between
By kind of day — water, history, mountain or table
Sarajevo to the falls: the run almost every first trip follows.
